Our OCA Convention is an Annual event currently being held at the Sheraton Portland Airport the last weekend in April. This event brings national, international and local speakers together to share their expertise for CE hours that are PACE approved for all states that accept PACE as approved CE for renewal-licensure. The convention offers a total of 20 possible hours over Friday (8 hours), Saturday (8 hours) and Sunday morning (4 hours). We offer a variety of topics each year so that there is always something for everyone. We also have vendors offering a chance to look at products and services of interest to you for your practice. This event is a great way to catch up with friends and colleagues, enjoy the social events that are offered as well as getting the needed CE. Beverly Harger, DC, DACBR, is a 1987 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Western States Chiropractic College (now UWS). She is currently the director of radiology at University of Western States with her primary responsibility being a consultant for chiropractic clinicians. She is an active member of the American College of Chiropractic Radiology and the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology. As an educator in chiropractic radiology with more than 30 years of teaching experience her programs are designed to emphasize what clinicians need to know for improved patient care and management.
Course/session:
In conjunction with a focused history and physical examination, imaging studies play an important role in accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment of patients. Using a case-based approach this presentation will focus on frequently missed, overlooked, or misdiagnosed conditions of the spine and extremities. These conditions when not diagnosed early and managed appropriately may result in long-term pain and disability. Clinical cases will be used as a basis to explore when and what diagnostic imaging studies yield the most appropriate outcomes.
Simon J. Agger, DC graduated from Western States Chiropractic College in 1997. He was licensed in Oregon and began in practice in 1998. Dr. Agger was born and raised in England and first came across the Atlantic in 1990 where he met his future wife in the Grand Canyon. He studied massage and reflexology while in the USA and practiced both prior to studying Chiropractic medicine. He has lived in the US since 1992, married JoEllen, completed pre-med and then his studies at WSCC (now UWS). Dr. Agger utilizes many tools and techniques in his practice including Diversified, drop-table and Activator. He is a Mentor/preceptor for both Chiropractic Interns/New Doctors, and also for the Functional Medicine and Human Nutrition Masters of Science Degree Program students/ interns at UWS. Dr. Agger is a Board Certified Supervisor for Certified Nutrition Specialist graduates for their 1000 hour clinical training. He also educates and lectures to other healthcare practitioners throughout the Pacific NW on the common health conditions seen in the clinic. In addition to his advanced Nutrition and Chiropractic training, Dr Agger holds advanced training in the evaluation, detection and treatment of both whiplash and concussion injuries from sports and accident injuries. Dr. Agger now travels the country as a speaker as well. He is a member of the Oregon Chiropractic Association.
She has been involved in three chirorpactic mission trips to central America where chiropractic care was so enthusiastically received that hundreds of people would be lined up and waiting at the benginning of her treatment day.
In 2010 she embarked on course work to earn a degree in Chiropractic Neurology and after taking 475 classroom hours and passing a rigorous board examination, received her certifcation in 2012, becoming one of only a handful of Chiropractic Neurologists in the state of Oregon.
Dr. Swingen blends a warm compassion, persistence, a variety of chiropractic techniques, and a quarter-century of clinical skill and experience to attain optimum results for her patients. She is proud to be a doctor her community of patients can depend upon for excellent, same-day care. Dr. Swingen has published research in the peer-reviewed literature as a result of her work in the field of neurological rehabilitation (Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal, April/May 2017).
Dr. Glen Zielinski is a Chiropractic Physician and Board Certified Functional Neurologist. He graduated Suma Cum Laude from Parker College of Chiropractic in September 2000. He was the Valedictorian of his class, and received numerous awards including the largest scholarship in the chiropractic profession. He completed his neurology training with the Carrick Institute for Clinical Neuroscience, graduated first in his class, and became board certified as a Chiropractic Neurologist in 2003. He was hired as an Assistant Professor of Neurology with the Carrick Institute.
He founded Northwest Functional Neurology in 2006.
His work was featured in the Netflix series Afflicted, which focused on sufferers of chronic diseases.
He is on the Board of the Brain Injury Alliance of Oregon and lectures for them as well to many different healthcare professional groups. He is a member of the Oregon Chiropractic Association and received the OCA’s Education Award in 2019.

Dr. Garreth MacDonald has over 22 years in practice in Oregon. Dr. MacDonald has a Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology. Debra Darmata works with the Oregon Health Authority -- Zero Suicide Program and has been working with the OCA to bring us programs on Suicide intervention and prevention, as it pertains to you as a health care provider. She will be helping you learn to recognize the signs and symptoms that is necessary for the prevention. This course will give you required CE for suicide intervention & prevention that is now needed annual for your DC license renewals.
Dr. Saboe began his Albany practice over 30 years ago in 1981, a practice established by his father Dr. Vern Saboe, Sr., in 1956. He grew up in Albany graduating from West Albany High School and completing many of his undergraduate studies at Linn-Benton Community College. Dr. Saboe and his wife Jeri who were high school sweethearts have given their lives to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and attend North Albany Community Church. Dr. Saboe has two sons, Jackson and Ammon. Jeri has two daughters Taylor and Nicole.
Following completion of his undergraduate work Dr. Saboe graduated from then Western States Chiropractic College Dec. 14, 1979, a four year chiropractic school located in Portland, Oregon, now the University of Western States. Following chiropractic school, Dr. Saboe completed a two year course of study in 1984 sponsored by the Motion Palpation Institute and a three year course of study in orthopedics sponsored by Los Angeles Chiropractic College in 1987. He subsequently completed a three year course in neurology in 1990 sponsored by Parker College of Chiropractic in Pasadena, Texas, and in 1997 completed a two year internal disorders program co-sponsored by Western States Chiropractic College and Logan College of Chiropractic located in St. Louis, Missouri. He then completed a three year course of study in forensic science sponsored by Logan College of Chiropractic in 2000. Dr. Saboe is the only chiropractic physician in Oregon board certified in all three subspecialties of orthopedics, neurology, and forensic science.
Jim’s first job was at his father’s law firm when he was in the 6th grade. He delivered legal documents to be filed at the courthouse. He did this on the 10-speed bike he bought with the money he earned from working at his father’s firm. In high school, Jim’s dad took him to legal seminars where’s his dad was often a speaker. He’d talk with Jim about his cases and trials – Jim often watched his dad in court. He always stressed the importance that the client comes first and all the steps an attorney can take to make sure that happens. In 2022, Jim’s father passed away two months short of having practiced law for 60 years.
In 1998, Jim and his family moved to Portland so his wife could help take care of her mother, who had Parkinson’s. Jim and Dean Heiling started working together in 1998. After 22 years of practicing together, Dean became Of Counsel in 2020. Jim and Roy Fernandes have been working together since 2010 and became partners in 2020. Roy and Jim continue to build upon the excellence that was started with Dean by becoming the first personal injury B Corp in the world in 2022 and being awarded small business of the year in the state of Oregon in 2022 by the Better Business Bureau.
Dr. Trevor Berry is the founder of Arizona Chiropractic Neurology Center and has been in practice since 1997 in Chandler, AZ.
He has been a board-certified chiropractic neurologist since 2001 through ACNB. He has over 3000 hours in post-doctoral studies in integrative neurology, functional medicine, and low-level laser therapy. He is involved in multiple laser studies and has been the principal investigator for Level 1 FDA clearances, and has been awarded the 2014 researcher of the year for Erchonia lasers.
As an international speaker since 2010, he lectures on nutrition and functional medicine, laboratory testing, neurological diagnostic testing, functional neurology, and low-level laser therapy. Dr. Berry co-founded BTB Health Systems and was hired as the Chief Clinical Officer for Applied Functional Neurology (AFN) in 2022.

Dr Karen Konarski-Hart was born in Detroit Michigan. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1975. She moved to Little Rock and established her private practice in 1979 immediately after receiving her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from National College of Chiropractic located in Lombard, Illinois.
Dr Konarski-Hart has earned a Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics and Pain Management and a certification in acupuncture. She holds a Masters degree in Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, is a licensed EMT and is a nationally certified medical examiner for commercial vehicle operators. Appointed by 2 governors to the Arkansas State Board of Health, she served as the first chiropractic physician to be elected president of that Board. She has also served as president of the Arkansas Chiropractic Association, as state delegate to the American Chiropractic Association and has recently been elected as the first Arkansan and first woman vice president of the American Chiropractic Association. Among her many awards she was named a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, Delegate of the Year for the ACA and ACA's Humanitarian of the Year
As an EMT Dr Konarski-Hart is a member of the AR 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team and leader of the Pulaski County Medical Reserve Corps. She teaches CPR/AED as an American Heart Association instructor and disaster and emergency response for the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company, the largest malpractice provider for her profession. Educational sessions are available for professionals or laypersons, individuals or groups. Her specialty focus is working with caregivers to ensure proper preparation for potential personal or community emergencies. As of May 21 2014, commercial motor vehicle operators must pass a medical exam administered by a certified examiner. With her certification, as per the Department of Transportation, Dr Konarski-Hart can accommodate those needs either individually in-office or at a work site in a group setting. Her certification also extends to sampling hair or urine for controlled substance evaluation.
Dr Konarski-Hart is also very active in community events. Among other activities, she is past president of the Hillcrest Merchants Association, secretary of the Hillcrest Residents Association and an active member of BNI mid-America. Beyond these duties, she has written for a number of professional and lay publications and has done health lectures and presentations for professional and community organizations.

For Kathy, her entry into the chiropractic profession in 1983 was both a personal and professional milestone. Not only had she found her professional calling and passion, but she learned firsthand how chiropractic care impacts patients. Suffering from life-long, severe asthma, she became a patient the same day she became an insurance CA. It wasn’t long before her health was transformed and her career began. Dr. Lee recently moved with his family to the Portland Metro Area from the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended University of California Los Angeles where he majored in Psychobiology and Accounting while minoring in Art History and Asian American Studies. He earned his doctorate in 2005 at the State University of New York and received the 2005 COVD Vision Therapy award. He then furthered his education and passion in vision therapy as a resident at SUNY’s Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation program. Dr. Lee has also received his Fellowship in College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Dr. Max has been practicing vision therapy since 1997 as part of his Optometry program.
On his spare time, Dr. Lee enjoys hiking, exploring historic sites, painting, eating new cuisines and cooking new recipes with his family. Lately, his 2 year old daughter has been keeping him busy touring all the playgrounds in Portland. He also loves to travel. He has scaled Cambodia’s Angkor Wat’s walls to swimming in Croatia’s coast and even volunteering in the countryside of Guatemala, and much more.
Adam Klotzek, DC, DACNB, FACFN, FABVR, FICC is a staff clinician at Plasticity Brain Centers of Orlando, as well as a Professor of Neurology at the Carrick Institute. He holds a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan University along with Diplomate status in Neurology. He also holds Fellowship status in both Functional Neurology, Vestibular Rehabilitation, along with certifications in Attention Deficit Disorders, Electrodiagnostics and Sports Rehabilitation. He is an accomplished worldwide lecturer in the field of neurology and ReceptorBased neurological treatment, delivering over 700 presentations totaling over 11,000 hours, on various topics in neurology. Deed E. Harrison, D.C., graduated from Life-West Chiropractic College in 1996. Dr. Harrison has developed and researched original spinal rehabilitation procedures and has lectured to thousands of Chiropractors in over 300 educational conferences around the world. He has authored approximately 100 peer-reviewed spine related publications, 4 spine textbooks, and numerous conference proceedings. Laura A. Newsom is an attorney at The Gatti Law Firm. She exclusively handles workers’ compensation cases for our clients who have been hurt while on-the-job.
Before coming to The Gatti Law Firm and helping injured clients, Laura worked on the other side of injury cases, which means she represented employers and insurance companies in both private practice and in-house at a large insurance company. Originating from Cairo, Dr. Gabriel of The Wellness Center PDX transitioned from early pharmacy roots to chiropractic care, earning his doctorate from Palmer College. With 15 years in healthcare, he emphasizes research-based treatments, blending advanced medical technology with holistic care. An active Oregon Chiropractic Association member, he also contributes to Portland's Rotary and Toastmaster Clubs. Dr. Gabriel cherishes his NE Portland life, enjoying snowboarding and Spartan races.

Dr. Darrell Brett has been in practice at the same location in Portland Oregon since 1984. In 1990 he sub-specialized in spine surgery only and no longer performs intracranial surgery electively. He performs approximately 750 spine surgeries per year, mainly involving the cervical and lumbar spine. He has excellent clinical outcome scores in the top 1% of his national peers and has an infection rate of less than .01% per year. Dr. Brett has been open to working with the chiropractic profession since starting practice and has taken patient referrals from DC’s for 35 years.
